A couple of shots of the final installation set-up for the MA Fine Art: Contemporary Practice show back in September, which was given the Sandra Blow award.

Immediately following the MA, with the help of a professional development bursary from Visual Arts South West, I was able to undertake a 1-day Introduction to MAX for Artists course at the London College of Communication, which I hope will enable me to develop this area of work further.

‘March Fourth’ – members’ events at CMR Gallery

March 2013 saw a month-long programme of research, development and collaboration by the artist members of CMR Gallery in Redruth. I found it an invaluable time to spend working out ideas for installation pieces, ahead of the interim show for the MA Fine Art course. I explored projection of some of the video pieces I’ve made from the night shoot in Godolphin Woods, incorporating other materials including debris netting to diffuse, obscure and enhance the images.

The emphasis is on research: offering the entire CMR membership space to develop, test and discuss work with other members and consider how the location & architecture – physical and organisational – of this independent, artist led, membership organism might best support their practices. Conversation during this month will help inform future programming.

The Unconference that was held at the end of the month saw us developing plans for the future that could include these kinds of events held regularly.

Seven – an exhibition of work by MA Fine Art students at Falmouth

We have a show coming up at CMR Gallery, Redruth – seven of us are exhibiting our ‘interim’ work mid-way through the course, and everyone is welcome to the opening night on Friday 19th April (7-9pm) or during the weekend (Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April, 10am-4pm).

Artists taking part are: Sophie Anderson, Karl Arbuthnot, Claire Burchell, James Kinder, Laura Menzies, Katri Paakkari and myself. The work includes painting, video, installation, sculpture and performance. I will be showing a video installation that explores contemporary  images from Godolphin House and estate – one of the oldest in the county, with a previously powerful role in mining, politics and the monarchy.

Night shoot in Godolphin Woods

Slide1Working on a video installation for my interim MA show, which will be at CMR Gallery, Redruth… thanks to Pip the NT Ranger at Godolphin Woods and Laura the Visitor Experience Manager, I was able to film the ‘Trago Tree’ in the woods, with green gel spotlights placed to highlight the dips in the landscape where mining took place. Editing it now to create the piece that will go into the space at CMR… will be open to the pulbic Friday 19th April 7-9pm and then Sat 20th and Sun 21st April 10am-4pm.

‘The Dark Rooms’ – contemporary art event in Helston: 2nd & 3rd February 2013

‘The Dark Rooms’, curated by Jesse Leroy Smith at  the Passmore Edwards building, 3 Penrose Road, Helston, Cornwall TR13 8TP

Over forty artists –  film-makers , photographers, sculptors, painters, performance and sound artists – have created a dreamscape journey through the schoolrooms.  Students from Falmouth University will present a ‘show within the show’ entitled ‘Parameters of the Dark’.

Saturday 2nd February 1pm to 10pm, Sunday 3rd February 12pm to 6 pm – we suggest coming on Saturday evening from 6 pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.  Unaccompanied children cannot be admitted.

Jesse Leroy Smith will give a guided tour of the exhibition at 4pm on Sunday 3 February.

Jesse Leroy Smith approached the Trustees of CAST (see below)  with a proposal to use the building for an art event before artists start to occupy the studios.  The Trustees welcome this initiative and hope that ‘The Dark Rooms’ will act as a catalyst for future activity.  With its close links with the Helston Folk Museum and its central location in West Cornwall, Jess Leroy Smith sees the Passmore Edwards building as a hub for creativity and invention and hopes that ‘The Dark Rooms’ will lead to further collaborations and contemporary art events.

‘The Dark Rooms’, curated by Jesse Leroy Smith

Jesse Leroy Smith has invited artists to transform every room in the old school building into an individual work of art.  The itinerary of ‘The Dark Rooms’ begins on the ground floor, where works of art in a wide range of media contribute to a brooding cacophony of sound and dissonant imagery, exploring the psychology, politics and complex identities of the human condition. On the upper floor of the building the mood of the exhibition changes, to embrace expansive and dream-like landscapes. This exploratory journey finally resolves in the last rooms of the exhibition, with meditative and observational films that reflect on the natural landscape. In Jesse Leroy Smith’s exhibition scenario Individual works of art become points in a narrative that draws on the history and ethos of the Passmore Edwards building.

As an addition to ‘The Dark Rooms’, Jesse Leroy Smith has invited two students from Falmouth University’s MA in Curatorial Practice to curate ‘a show within the show’, featuring work by current BA and MA students at Falmouth University.

Tapping into the dual senses of nostalgia and anticipation inherent in the building at this transitional moment in its history, the curators have brought together ‘artists who share an interest in alchemical transformations of physical and emotional space and works that oscillate between imagined pasts and projected futures’.

CAST

The Cornubian Arts and Science Trust (CAST) is a new charity, created in 2012.  Its Trustees are Alastair Cameron, Teresa Gleadowe, Chris Hibbert, Karen Townshend, John Wilkin and Ross Williams. The Trustees of CAST are hosting ‘The Dark Rooms’ as an independent project initiated and curated by Jesse Leroy Smith.

For the student show ‘Parameters of the Dark’, I have created a looped video piece called ‘Bagas Gwari’ (playgroup in Cornish), which visually explores the rooms in the Institute that were formerly used by a children’s playgroup. The video captures traces of the children’s handprints, coat hooks, footprints and other architectural features, reminding the viewer of the histories of the space, before it is renovated and prepared for the future.

Love at The Poly exhibition in Falmouth, 9 – 23 Feb 2013

I’m in the process of getting a series of photographs printed for the forthcoming ‘Love at The Poly’ show in Falmouth.

The work looks at the bedroom interiors of the former Cornwall Motel – there’s more information on the ‘Love at The Poly’ website, which has just been launched. ‘Love at The Poly’ will take over all the galleries in the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society building and will feature the work of current students and recent graduates of Falmouth University.

PLACE

My work for the MA in Fine Art: Contemporary Practice at UCF is increasingly focused on ‘place’, particularly from the perspective of the outsider. The environment I am working is so culturally loaded it is impossible not to end up being influenced by it… but at the moment it’s the derelict, forgotten or everyday places that I’m interested in, rather than the areas of outstanding natural beauty. I’m also looking at the history of constructed ‘natural’ landscapes – the plants alien to the place they inhabit; the design and building work behind the scenes; the entrances/exits/boundaries that define different pieces of land.

These photos aren’t great quality but they’re research shots for some photo/video/painting work that I hope will come together as installation pieces…

 

 

 

The Dip Circle: neon work and interpretation booklet

Accompanying The Dip Circle installation at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, there will be a booklet printed in a limited edition of 500. This will be distributed at the Maritime Museum, The Poly (The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society) and Falmouth Art Gallery throughout the Falmouth Splash Festival 7-16 September 2012.
