PLACE

My work for the MA in Fine Art: Contemporary Practice at UCF is increasingly focused on ‘place’, particularly from the perspective of the outsider. The environment I am working is so culturally loaded it is impossible not to end up being influenced by it… but at the moment it’s the derelict, forgotten or everyday places that I’m interested in, rather than the areas of outstanding natural beauty. I’m also looking at the history of constructed ‘natural’ landscapes – the plants alien to the place they inhabit; the design and building work behind the scenes; the entrances/exits/boundaries that define different pieces of land.

These photos aren’t great quality but they’re research shots for some photo/video/painting work that I hope will come together as installation pieces…

Studio time…

Just started some small paintings on board and small-to-medium sized canvases: aiming to have them ready for Krowji’s Open Studios in Redruth (30th Nov – 2nd Dec) and the ‘Launch Collective’ show at The Crypt Gallery, St Ives (1st-7th Dec).

I’m also taking a lot of photos and starting to make some short films that I want to show with some of the paintings, testing out a more inter-disciplinary way of working.

All the work is about place: the everyday, the driven-past-at-speed, the exceptional, the beautiful, the ugly and the forgotten places that I encounter.
